Q I just received disappointing news. I am graduating and thought I had a job lined up. It fell through and I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions?
Oh, I hate it when things do not work out how we thought they should. It is so hard on the spirit. There is often an angry part that wants to cry out and say, “No, it is not suppose to be this way.” On the flip side there is another part that feels rejected and hurt that they did not choose us and it did not work out how we thought. Oh yes, not to mention the fear we now have because we are clueless as to what’s the next step in our lives. Anger, hurt, rejection, and fear—no wonder disappointments are so hard to work through.
What does one do when a door we have been knocking on does not open? Do you pound harder or is retreat more your way of coping? It is definitely a time to regroup. Sometimes putting together a new plan helps, but more often then not the thing that is most needed is to let go and trust. We think it is all up to us to bring forth the next wonderful thing in our lives. There is some truth to this, but in reality any manifestation is a joint effort between you and the Universe.
How does one nurture this partnership so that is healthy and strong? One way is to keep the lines of communication open. There is a risk of shutting down and closing off communication when we feel disappointed—not a good idea when we need guidance now more than ever. Prayer, meditation, and journaling are all ways of saying I am here and I am listening. They also offer a modality to work through anger, hurt, and disappointment. This is important, because these are the very emotions that run interference on what we want to bring forth.
Another important aspect here is to rebuild trust—trust in the Universe and trust in yourself. Something went wrong with your original plan so it is easy to blame someone or something. Again, this is not helpful. These strong emotions will only entrench you more in what you do not want. I find it helpful to remind myself of previous disappointments and how good actually came from them. I can see how the Divine was looking after me and preparing me for something better. It helps me trust once again. A similar process also helps rebuild trust with yourself. Remind yourself of how you got through previous disappointments and that the outcome was good. All of this helped you gain more clarity, strength, and wisdom—spiritual gifts you have benefited greatly from.
New beginnings take a lot of trial and error. Do not be hard on yourself if some of your tries resulted in dead ends. Those are meant to be closed doors for whatever reason—reasons that you will understand later. It is all part of the process to get you to that perfect job. It is happening—let go, and trust. Trust and keep knocking. Soon the right door will open with ease and it will all make sense.
